This concept is outstanding!!! I will buy this bad boy when it is released. Hey how about a steam Cthulhu? No one has anything like it, and I believe that Cthulhu is public domain. (If he isn't you can call him something else. You can't copyright a fat tentacled squid)
I don't think it is...remember the flak that TSR had in the '80s when they printed the Cthulul mythos in the original Fiend Folio?... B...

Cthulhu is definitely *not* public domain--Chaosium has the rights to all of the HPL characters pretty much locked up IIRC. I know that there have been some Cthulhu mini's put out in the recent past, but I couldn't say with any authority if they licensed the rights from Chaosium or not.

That's fine. A "fat mechanical steam-powered biped squid" is in no way Cthulhu. The beauty of HP Lovecraft's stories is that is no artwork. All the images of Cthulhu are based on his very loose discriptions of him. The very notion of a mechanical creature is in itself different from Lovecraft. Call the new creation "Cephalon" or "Lavathoid".

"fat mechanical steam-powered biped squid" I can't really say why, but that phrase makes me giggle. You're spot on--what made HPL and his ilk memorable is the use of just enough description to inspire fear. Rather than spelling it out, they gave enough hints to let your imagination run off with it's own ideas. Classic stuff. I think you'd be ok going the mechanical route. To be honest, I can't really see Chaosium or anyone else really pushing the issue even if the mechanical likeness was quite similar to the commonly accepted appearance of Cthulhu. I also doubt Chaosium has lawyers trolling the 'net looking for "potential IP infringement" like some other companies..... *cough* GW *cough* My only request: make it big. Really big. I want my other 28mm figs to appropriately cower when I unveil the evil that is Mecha-Bipedal-Squid-Guy.
