Read Starship Troopers. They ARE in self-contained pods, and when they're
put in the shells they're in darkness. The protagonist talks about the shakes
he gets everytime they drop.

I have read Starship Troopers but fail to see how that should curtail or end the discussion here. The point of this thread is to discuss the type of ATIV Armorcast should develop and produce.

To help avoid a flame war starting I should interject that I was referencing ther Starship troopers movie. Not the book.   Grin

Sorry, I wasn't saying that should end the discussion. I'm saying that in the
Starship Troopers novel, they were in individual drop pods (don't remember
what they actually called them). I was recommending the book.

My apologies as well -- I did not for my reply to sound so harsh -- I had typed a longer one and was editing. Unfortunately the final product failed to match my intention and was too terse due to the sloppy editing.

I believe that the first release should be the individual or small squad pod, similar to the "Alien Birthing Pods" in the Armorcast line (which used to be the same thing for slimy, undead things in the Warzone game), or the GW drop pods...

I do like the thought that was posted earlier about making a second release in the future that would incorporate a couple of the individual pods in a VTOL dropship that would be functional across many game lines....

Good discussion!   Personaly I'd like to see both a Squad sized drop pod (5 man)   and later some type of fly in vehicle that could hold ten men.    Sort of a generic mechanical look would be nice, then it could be used foralmost any army.   Since I have a number of different armies myself.     Brimstone

I think that you should have an Open Design Competition for Drop Pods and Drop Ships. Think of the number of designs, and the range of designs you could get!

Greeting everyone, I'm George.  I didn't see an introduction forum, if there is one I'm sorry I missed it.

I personally would like a pod large enough to contain (not actually inside, but if they were deployed nearby it would seem plausable) a 10 man squad or a walking vehicle.

I know that would be large, I would recommend casting in two halves (hollow) that could be glued together.  This would eliminate wasting resin and a really, really heavy model.

You guys have a great site; Mike, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Welcome to the Forum George.
That's pretty close to the plan actually. Though Mike's design is pretty complex, that's the gist of it. He showed me some sketches the other day and they look great. He's putting a lot of thought into the mechanics of the craft.

Thanks for the update/peek at the ideas behind the Drop Pod. I won't say I am overjoyed to see that the Pod will be the standard 10 man generic "Squad Pod". That being said I trust in your judgement and will add it to the list of things to pick up and show to my firends who play 40k. I also intend to wait patiently wait to see what develops on the Lander/VTOL front and hope that at some future point you might reconsider the single man pods. When/If they get made I will order at least 12 - 20 of them

Hey Top,
Do you have any reference or sketches of what you're talking about with the single man drop units? We are batting around one idea for individual model insertion. But some other view points would be helpful.

This is the intro video for Quake II.  A few shots of individual drop pods.

For individual insertion I always liked the Quake videogame version of it.

well, for a single man lander/drop pod, you could design something based on the design of the re-entry vehicle that NASA used in the sixties for the Gemini and Apollo missions, but reduce the scale so that instead of holding 3 people, it only holds one plus necessary equipment...that way, you could take a generic 28mm mini, and scale it so that it is, say, 40mm tall and maybe 20mm wide at the base and tapered to the top...that way, you could get the idea of the heat shield at the bottom because of the shape of the vehicle...you could model projections near the top of the pod to simulate retro rockets that are stowed away during entry, and that would give you as a company the option of the same model with the rockets deployed...
